When carbs, which create energy in the body, are removed from the nutritional equation, the body is forced to burn fat stores to create energy. This is why many individuals who start this diet lose weight quickly at first. This phase is actually one of the aspects of this diet that makes it so controversial, because this process is known as ketosis or starvation, and there are certain health risks associated with this process.

While many advocates of high protein diets often suggest that protein is a natural appetite suppressant, there is no research to support this claim. In fact, consumers have reported that hunger and low energy levels are often big issues for them on this diet.
